Lessons Learned

Dear Students,

Shortly before classes ended in June, I asked you to tell me what you learned from our brief project. Unfortunately, I posed the question too late in the school year for you to respond. Fortunately, over the summer I was able to travel to South Africa to ask the students at Gauteng Comprehensive the same question in-person. They were gracious and welcomed me warmly with a program they organized on my behalf. I left South Africa very impressed by their efforts!

Attached below is a (very) short clip I put together from digital photos provided by Ina Smith, University of Pretoria (one of my collaborators), and audio from my digital recorder. The audio contains a few words from the students about what they learned from the project. The audio is uneven so there may be places where you will have to turn up the volume.

There is also a video of the students performing a dance during the program in the Photo Gallery on this blog.

Many thanks to Thembi Hadebe and her "babies" (Paula's Links), Ina Smith and the University of Pretoria for their contributions to this project!

Charnai

Dear Students,

During the week I did a project in class and I compared things in the United States and South Africa. Someone in my class compared dancing in the US and South Africa. I found that the dancing in South Africa was very interesting because I love to dance. Another thing I learned was the clothing like weddings in the US, we usually get a veil and a white gown with white shoes. I found that in South Africa, when women get married you would wear a head gear and I found that interesting because it was a lot different. I learned about HIV/AIDS in South Africa like I know there aren't a lot of medications in South Africa but in the United States we don't have to worry so much. I really enjoyed learning about your country.

Keron

Dear Student,

I have come to know a lot about your country. Things I haven't known before. I just come to realize that in your country, over 3,000,000 million die because of AIDS. I am sorry to hear such bad news. We are experiencing some of the same things, but not as much.

In America, our black males usually catch this disease and in Africa your males and females are catching this disease, and the age ranges from 15-24. The most people that catch this disease are homosexual and babies born with it.

Well, it was nice to know about your country.

Get Better Soon

Jasmine

Dear Student,

I am writing to you because my class has been doing a project on South Africa and comparing it to the United States. I just have a couple of questions for you. I am curious to know what type of foods do you eat over in Africa? What type of religions are the majority of your people? Do you have any holidays that you celebrate, if so, what are they?

These are just some questions that I am asking. I find it quite interesting. Thank you in advance.

Tyra

Dear Student,

While I was doing research on comparing the United States and South Africa. I learned that South Africa has 11 official languages.

Chanelle

While I was doing my project, I noticed that African dance and professional dance, that we do in America is not so different. In America we can take classes to learn African dance, ballet, pointe, hip-hop, tap and modern dance. I also learned that in Africa you too can take special classes to learn these type of dances. I was very excited to learn that you to have the opportunity to learn to do professional dance like me!

Briana

Dear Students,

Recently, I had did some research comparing South Africa and the United States. I chose the education system. As I was doing my research, I read that in some schools, teachers that are white, teach black children that they are nothing and teach them to work for low wage jobs. In the US, we are taught that we all are equal and should never settle for less. I just want to know is it really true, and if it is how does it feel?

Nicole

Dear Student,

I have recently done a project comparing the US movies to movies that you may watch in South Africa. I have hot successfully fount out what I needed to know. I just want to ask you personally, what recent movies have your seen or heard about? I would also like to know if American movies are popular where you are? I hope to hear back from you soon.

Cheree

Dear Students,

I just discovered many things in your country. I discovered how your people are just like us. For example, you dance like we do. Y'all dance for special events and other things. Also, I learned how some people in your country act up in school and have smart mouths like us in America.

If you had a chance to come to America, would you come over here? Do y'all watch "BET" on tv or videos? If so, what kind?

Destinee

Dear Student,

Hello again, recently my class had to do a project where we had to make a newspaper. I decided to look up how dancing in Africa was like dancing here. I learned that most of the dances that we do now came from Africa. Even the dances my mom did when she was a kid were made of steps brought over from Africa. I really enjoyed learning about it. I thought it was really interesting learning about the history of some dances.

Shandella

Dear Student,

Hello again, I was recently assigned a project on "South Africa" and I researched the top 3 killers. Of course it stated HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and respiratory problems are the top three. How do you feel about HIV/AIDS vs. Malaria?

Do these epidemics bother you? Do you know anyone with either, and how do you feel when your around them?

Tanasia

Dear Student,

My part of my groups project was to tell about the different African fashion, and the difference between African fashion and fashion in the United States. While doing so, I found out the fashion in South Africa is completely different from fashion in the United States.

Denita

Dear Student,

I did research on South African poverty. I found out that poverty there is worse than over here, but there is still a lot of poverty here. In my research , I learned that you have to walk a long way to fetch water, is that true?

In the United States, we just turn on our sinks in our houses or use water fountains if we are out we can even by Spring Water from the store for cheap. I also researched that the big part of South African suburbs is a high crime area such as Johannesburg. In the US, the suburbs is not a high crime area and it is safe and nice.

In the United States we have a big problem about abandoned houses and drug houses and crack houses. Do you have the same problems? I would like to know if my research is true or not so please write back and tell me.

Shanee'

Dear Student,

In my high school we had to do a project on South Africa vs. United States. I chose HIV/AIDS in South Africa to HIV/AIDS in America. In South Africa there is a very big problem on treatments in South Africa. In America, anyone who is carrying the virus is able to get treatment. The treatment for HIV/AIDS takes the patient through the stops of the disease. In Africa, the government won't let them get the treatments because the treatments can harm a mother that is carrying a baby and has the disease.

The people in South Africa have very low immune systems and it doesn't take 8 years to contract the disease. There are many differences and similarities in South Africa and America. I loved researching South Africa.

Samir

Dear Student,

Hi, I am a student at Parkway Northwest High School and in my Multi Ethicultural class, we are learning about South Africa and a lot of things there. I have learned a lot about South Africa, like the schools down there and about your sports and music and also your languages down there which you have a lot of them.

Adriana

Dear Student,

I did research on fashion in Africa. I found out that dealing with fashion, women wear head gear, wrappers, and shawls. I researched that during a wedding, women wear head gear. In America during a wedding, women wear something called a veil. I would like to know when the women wear the head gear, is that part of the culture or is it a choice of fashion? Is it possible to have a complete wedding outfit without the head gear?

Shani

Dear Student,

It's me Shani again. I just wanted to ask you a few questions about your culture, lifestyle, etc. I have been researching about the lives of South Africa compared to the lives of Americans. I have researched that there are certain things that brides wear during their wedding. In America, brides wear veils. I researched that the women of South Africa wear some kind of head gear. Is this research true?

Write back please.

Teshonda

Dear Student,

I found out that African dress is the same in concept as American dress. I have learned we dress for different occasions.

When there is a wedding, I have learned in Africa they wear a special head dress. In America, there are also special veils that are worn for weddings.

Marcellus

Dear Student,

While doing my research on South Africa, I discovered that America and South Africa are not all that different after all. For example, most of our food is the same and we enjoy most of the same things.

Akua

Dear Student,

This is Akua and I was just checking up. The summertime is coming soon and me and all my friends are planning what to do. Most of us want to get jobs so we can buy some fly stuff. I might work at my local YMCA. YMCA is basically like a gym and they have special activities for young kids.

Sincerely,

Akua

Al'Tia Clarke

Hey, this is Al'Tia and i'm 16 years old and I attend Parkway NW High School for Peace and Social Justice. In my 2nd period class, MLT Culture for Ethnic Issues with Ms. Davis we were assigned to make newspapers and compare South Africa and the USA and I looked up South African dance and I found out that y'all dance based on stories. It was fun researching.

BooBoo

Jessica

Dear Student,

We recently just did a project on comparing United Sttes and South Africa and I found out a lot of information like there are more girls than there are boys. Also, I learned that the music in South Africa has more meaning and emotion and United States music talks more about life and experiences. The dancing is almost the same but in many ways different. Well talk to you later.

Tyra

Dear Student,

I learned that South Africa's life expectancy is 75 years old for boys and 80 years old for girls. I would like to know if this is true. Also, I would like to know is there more girls than boys in South Africa.

Philadelphia

Dear Students,

Philadelphia is where I live but to be more specific I live in the Lawncrest section of the Northwest. Philadelphia is made up of different sections. My neighborhood is very quiet unlike other neighborhoods which could be noisy and dangerous. There is a playground, park, and basketball court all up the street from my block. Also around the corner is a Burger King, Rita's Water Ice, and Dunkin Donuts. All throughout Philadelphia a.k.a Philly there are numerous of hot spots where teens have fun or hang out. My favorite hang out is Franklin Mills Mall and Cornbread& coffee. Some other places are Jamz Skating Rink, movie theaters, and the Museum. My deepest concern about Philly is the murder rate. On about the 96th day of the year there were about 100 murders. The saddest part about it is that a lot of babies and children are being innocently killed on a daily basis. Also Philadelphia has many things to after that other cities don't for example our Philly Cheese Steaks and Tasty Cakes that only sold exclusively here in Philly.

Sincerely,
Briana

Philadelphia

Dear Students,

The city of Philadelphia also known as the city of brotherly love, where there are popular places like the Wachovia Center, where a lot of famous celebrities and other performers have their concerts. We always have a lot of celebrities stop through. We also have a lot of historic landmarks such as The Liberty Bell, Love Park, the Belsy Ross House, The Philadelphia Art Museum, and many other places. Philadelphia has a lot night clubs for adults and some for teens like, Shampoo, 923, 1310, The Hideaway, and many more. We have a lot shopping malls, movie theaters, and other fun stuff. You could never get bored in Philadelphia. While Philadelphia is mostly known for its cheese-steaks, we also have Tasty cakes. I truly believe that Philadelphia is one of the most wonderful and beautiful cities in the world.

Sincerely,
Nicole

Philadelphia

Dear Students,

I like Philadelphia, first of all because I was born and raised here. Second because there is no place like here. There's a lot of black people that live here and there's always people outside. If you were riding down the street or walking your sure to hear some music or kids coming from somewhere close. Although Philly is always booming with excitement it's not really a safe place to be. There is a lot of violence and our city is basically #1 for the most murders. I really love the city. It means a lot to me and it makes up who I am.

Sincerely.
Akua

Philadelphia

Dear Students,

In my opinion the best place to live is Philadelphia, but there are times where it can be the worst. Some of the good things about Philadelphia is that there are a lot of places where you can go eat like McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, and any other places that sells junk food. Another good thing about Philadelphia is that all the attractions like Jamz(which is a skating rink), the movies, and the night clubs are all around my way. Also there a lot of national monuments that can be visited.

Sincerely,
Destinee

Philadelphia

Dear Students,

Philadelphia isn't the best place but it's better than what most people think of it to be. Philadelphia has many interesting places like the Franklin Institute, Liberty Bell, City Hall, the Gallery and many more. What I like about Philadelphia is that we have corner stores, basketball courts, chesse-steaks, and my favorite fast food restaurant McDonald's. Philadelphia also has a good basketball team which is the Philadelphia 76sers, even though they didn't make the playoffs. Philadelphia is an easy place to get around because of Septa. Which are buses that run routes all over. Philadelphia is kind of bad too, many killings and many people get hurt each night. Also here where I live there hotels and many good sites that you might find interesting.

Sincerely,
Kyle

Philadelphia

Dear Student,

There are many things that the city of Philadelphia holds in it. First of all, it has different neighborhoods such as Germantown, North Philly, South Philly, West Philly, and many more. Many celebrities come from Philly like Will Smith, Pink, Patty Label, and many more. We also have places where we call hot spots such as "The Gallery". We also have some great foods that aren't sold in other states and cities such as Tasty Cakes. We also have the best cheese steaks. We also have some bad things about Philadelphia. Even though we are known as the city of brotherly love, there are a lot of killings.

Sincerely,
Aliya

I live with my Grandmother, and life for me is pretty normal, I go through the same things that you guys go through. Do you have ant questions for me?

Denita

Dear Students,

My name is Denita I attend Parkway Northwest and I am in the 9th grade. I have three brothers and one sister. Right now I'm currently living with my family. In the United States there is a thing called foster care, which you are taken from your parents because maybe your parents can't provide for you and give you things that you need. When you are taken form your parents you are placed with another family who can support you and take care of you. I would like to tell you more about these things in future conversations, and maybe I could learn more about you.

I am also the youngest of three children, my older brother lives in Philadelphia with me, and my sister lives in Maryland. I love to sing and dance, and I would love to learn about your culture as well as your daily life. During this experience I hope to learn as much about South Africa as I can, and hope that me and my pen pal will remain friends for a long time, and we learn many things about each other.

Welcome!

Welcome to all of the participants of Cultural Lessons!

Learning about another culture can be very exciting. This forum is an opportunity for you to read about each other and learn about your similarities and differences, your schools and communities, and your everyday lives.

You may find some differences in cultural expressions, customs, and language, however I hope you will feel comfortable asking questions when there is something that you don’t understand.

Twice a week a question will be posted for your response and discussion. If there are specific topics that you would like to discuss please let your instructors know.

I have posted a link on the blog with your photos. You may also want to add photos of your community, your school, or just things that interest you.

The first posts are notes from some of the students in Philadelphia.

I hope you will enjoy meeting and learning about each other!
